Whelk egg cases are also known as sea wash balls as sailors used to wash with them, rather like using a sponge. They are laid by whelks in deeper water on the sea bed. Look for the developing little whelks inside each of the off-white egg cases. Each contains over ten eggs but only one will survive to adulthood, as the first to hatch eats its developing siblings. Sometimes you can find crabs and squat lobsters hiding in the folds.

If you find a piece of driftwood riddled with lots of holes, these could be the burrows of gribbles (a kind of crustacean) or shipworms. Shipworms have long, worm-like bodies and their shells have a kind of drill bit to help them bore into dead wood. Use a pen knife to cut into the wood to see the animals themselves.
